The British Council Connecting Classrooms Programme is open for applications, with the next deadline for schools to apply being 21 October 2011. Under Connecting Classrooms, grants are available to schools and local authorities/federations of schools (or affiliated bodies) from the UK to set up partnerships with schools usually from two different countries within one continent.

The aim of these partnerships is to bring an international dimension to young people’s learning, to improve their knowledge and understanding of other cultures and prepare them for life and work as global citizens. Partnerships last for three years, initially, and participating schools are eligible for funding to support activities and projects that sustain the link during this period. The level of funding available depends upon the countries involved in the partnership. The British Council will provide further information in the summer term about the partner countries available and the application process.

Last year the participating regions included sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, Central and South Asia, East Asia, Middle East, China and Latin America.

For more information visit this link
edited by Arts Moderator on 23/05/2011

This week we have discovered the Tudor Trust, which makes grants to voluntary and community groups working in any part of the UK, focusing their funding on supporting and empowering disadvantaged people and communities. They particularly want to help smaller, community-led organisations which work directly with people who are at the margins of society.

They consider an important part of their role to be to support work which is untried and which has uncertain outcomes. However, innovation is not the be all and end all: they also recognise the need for sound, practical work which seeks to bring stability and wellbeing into difficult places and situations. As well as core funding they can also provide project grants, capital grants for buildings or equipment and grants to help strengthen your organisation. There is no maximum or minimum grant.

Although their website is being updated you can download their funding guidelines at this link

As you may have seen recently in the news, the Clore Duffield Foundation is giving £8.2million to fund learning spaces for children and young people in 11 cultural organisations, including the National Theatre, the Tate Britain and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Since 2000, the Clore Duffield Foundation has given over £23.6million to fund museum, gallery and heritage learning spaces. It has also matched lottery funding, supported capital redevelopments and provided project, programme and revenue funding for the cultural sector, in particular for cultural learning.

If you too would like to potentially benefit from the Clore Duffield Foundation’s generosity, submit an application! There are no deadlines, but Trustees meetings to discuss proposals are usually held in June and September so get your application in soon to be considered this June.

For further information go to link

Our featured fund this week is from the Woodward Charitable Trust, one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts. They have Children's Summer Playscheme Grants available, of between £500 and £1,000, for summer playschemes for children aged 5-16.

This is a great opportunity for small groups to get funding as the Trustees don’t fund charities whose annual turnover exceeds £100,000. Preference is given to:

• small local playschemes that provide a wide-ranging programme of activities
• schemes that involve a large number of children
• schemes catering for those from disadvantaged backgrounds or that have a disability
• schemes that are inclusive such as projects that work with children from a range of backgrounds, abilities and race
• schemes where past users are encouraged to come back and help as volunteers

The deadline is 1 April so you still have a couple of weeks left to apply.

To find out more go to http://lonsas.org.uk/news_detail.aspx?ID=3173

Your LONSAS profile can be invaluable in finding work – increase your profile visibility and draw attention to your creative learning offer using these simple tips:

The ‘summary of your work’ and ‘detailed summary’ sections are really important in attracting educators. Use keywords, such as artforms or audiences that you work with that educators may use in the search engine, to provide a greater match and more visibility in searches.

Encourage teachers you have worked with to sign up and provide reviews of your work to add weight and credence to your profile.

Utilise the LONSAS website to increase your visibility – submit news or events items which will feature on the website and in our newsletter which is emailed to hundreds of educators.

Update your profile regularly and ensure that your two ‘Recent Projects’ feature work that you delivered recently, so educators know you are currently working.

Do you have any other tips for practitioners? How has LONSAS supported or assisted you or your organisation to find work?
